A barbecue pizza is the best homemade pizza. A hit for any summertime occasion like Canada Day or American Independence Day. Or make an any occasion Rainbow pizza!
BBQ Rainbow Pizza
It may have started out Italian but it's all American now. With both Canada Day and Independence Day coming up soon, here's an idea for a rainbow pizza. Just use red and white for Canada Day. Red, white and blue for July the 4th. I've thrown in a few more colors for whatever else anyone wants to celebrate, to make a rainbow pizza.
The best kind of homemade pizza (unless you have your own brick oven) is on the Barbie.
Pizza dough- Its one of the easiest dough there is to make.
- 6 cups all purpose flour
- 2 cups water
- 2 packages dry instant fast rising yeast
- 3 teaspoons sugar
- 3 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 tablespoon food dye (whatever color you like) optional
Mix all ingredients together and knead for 10 minutes. (Yes, you can knead it in a machine but I love getting my hands in the dough!) Put in covered oil bowl either in the refrigerator over night or in a warm place away from drafts until it is double in size (about two hours).
Roll it out, not too thin for the grill.
Pizza Sauce- I confess, I use the kind in the bottle! But if you want to make your own, it's easy just use tomato paste; add Italian spices and enough olive oil so it spreads.
Toppings:
Red
- Red Pepper You can peel them by putting them on the grill before you make the pizza and then just peel them.
- red hot small peppers
- Tomatoes - cherry, beefeaters, plumb field, sun dried
- red onions
- smoked red salmon
- back bacon (ok not quiet red but it is Canadian)
White:
- Cheese: Grated Mozzarella, or Feta, or Fortina, or Monterey Jack or Parmesan.
- White mushrooms
- thinly sliced thin skinned white potatoes
- turkey - luncheon meat or smoked or all ready cooked.
- white onions
- roasted garlic (can do that before you start making the pizza right on the grill)
- Artichoke hearts, sliced thin.
With just these two colors you have a Canada Day Pizza!
Blue:
- blue cheese
- blueberries (put them on towards the end or burry them in the cheese)
- thinly sliced blue potatoes
Now you have an all American tri-color pizza!
Yellow:
- pineapples
- yellow bell peppers
- thin sliced yellow squash
Orange:
- orange bell peppers
- beer sausages
- cheddar cheese
Green:
asparagus steam untill just tender. spinach
basil green pepper
unpeeled but scrubbed and sliced zucchini green olivesPurple:
purple olives (sorry all I can think of, if you can think of anything more please say so in the discussions) Brown:
just about any meat, including ground beef or soya meat imitation. But make sure its cooked or smoked first. Black:
black olives anchovies (they look kind of black to me)Have all toppings of your choice prepared and ready.
If there's a topping I don't have please say so in the discussions below.
Putting it all together:
Put the pizza on the grill, brown one side, then flip over. Spread the pizza sauce on top. Then get everyone to help put the toppings of your choice on. Cover it for about 3 minutes or until the cheese has melted. Serve.
Then sing O Canada, or The Stars and Strips Forever or I Can Sing a Rainbow or...

I love, love, love barbecue season; it means it's summer, it's a relaxed
time of year, and we get to eat outside on paper plates. BBQ pizza sounds
like a great idea! Good article. :) Jen

Out here in SoCal they'll put anything on a pizza and
consider it legit. Seriously. I've seen pineapple, avocado, citrus
fruit...Call me a traditionalist, but to me a pizza's not a pizza unless
it's got good ol' mozzarela, sauce, and some form of processed meat on it.

Oranges and avocados on pizza! Nope didn't ever even imagine that! No,
don't think I'll put that in the article.
For me, a pizza has
to have olives. Black olives. Everything else is optional.
