The holidays are the perfect time to prepare everyone's favorite treats. Family and friends will be delighted, no matter how little time is spent in the kitchen.

Bring the whole family in on the fun of making festive holiday treats. Spend all day in the kitchen preparing all of the recipes, or choose one at a time for something quick and easy. Don’t forget to set some aside as gifts to wrap for favorite teachers, next door neighbors and anyone else who might enjoy some holiday cheer.

Holiday Cake Mix Cookies

Starting with a mix makes this recipe so simple anyone can do it, and no one has to know.

Ingredients

  • Cooking spray
  • 1 package of yellow cake mix
  • 1/2 cup of butter or margarine
  • 1 tbsp. water
  • 2 eggs
  • 3/4 cup of chopped nuts
  • 3/4 cup of semi-sweet chocolate chips

Directions:

  1. Spray a cookie sheet with cooking spray.
  2. Pour half of the cake mix into a medium bowl and add softened butter, water and eggs.
  3. Slowly add the remainder of the cake mix until it is well blended.
  4. Stir the nuts and chocolate chips into the cookie batter.
  5. Using a small scoop or a tablespoon, drop the batter onto the cookie sheet.
  6. Bake in 375 degree oven for approximately 8 to 10 minutes.

Rum Balls

Anyone who likes the taste of rum will love these. They make ideal gifts, and a few go a long way.

Ingredients

  • 3 cups of crushed vanilla wafers
  • 2 cups of powdered sugar
  • 1/4 cup light rum
  • 1/2 cup crushed nuts (pecans and walnuts are best)

Directions:

  1. In a large bowl, mix the vanilla wafers and 1-1/2 cup of powdered sugar.
  2. Add the rum and nuts. Stir until well mixed.
  3. Form into 1-inch balls and roll in the remaining powdered sugar.

Ginger Cookies

These delicious ginger cookies add a little zing to the holiday offerings.

Ingredients

  • Cooking spray
  • 1 package of gingerbread mix
  • 1/3 cup of warm water
  • 1/4 tsp. dry ginger
  • (Optional) Small candies for decorating

Directions:

  1. Spray a cookie sheet with cooking spray.
  2. In a medium bowl, mix the gingerbread mix, water and dry ginger.
  3. Stir until it is smooth.
  4. Form into large ball then pat down to flatten and wrap with plastic wrap.
  5. Chill for about 2 hours.
  6. Roll out the dough until it is approximately 1/4 inch thick and cut with cookie cutters.
  7. Place cut cookies on the cookie sheet and bake in a 375 degree oven for approximately 8 to 10 minutes.
  8. Remove from oven and decorate the baked cookies with small candies.

Festive Krispie Treats

This is a festive variation of everyone’s favorite Rice Krispie Treats.

Ingredients

  • Cooking spray
  • 1 bag of marshmallows
  • 1/4 cup of butter or margarine
  • 5 cups Rice Krispies cereal
  • 1 cup red cinnamon candy
  • 1 cup green gumdrop candy

Directions:

  1. Spray a 13 inch by 9 inch baking pan with the cooking spray.
  2. Melt the marshmallows and butter in a large saucepan.
  3. Stir in the Rice Krispies cereal.
  4. Press the mixture into the baking pan.
  5. Sprinkle the candy over the top and press into the marshmallows and cereal, making sure the colors are evenly distributed.
  6. Cut into squares or rectangles.

All of these delicious treats are perfect for dessert, or enclose in plastic wrap and tie it closed with a pretty ribbon as a gift for someone special.
