» Feature Writer Joni Rose - Can't cook in this heat!

Hi Deborah,

We are having a heat wave. As I ate breakfast this morning with my daughter out on the patio, we talked about how it is too hot to cook and that we should make up some salads every few days for lunches etc. She's vegetarian, I'm not, so we tend to make a base that is vegetarian and then I add a meat of some sort.

I was so pleased to see your articles and recipes on the subject! I had forgotten about cous cous!

One of our favourite salads is grapes, celery, apples and raisins with a curry/mayonnaise dressing (just add curry to taste). I like the addition of chunks of chicken breast as well - for my daughter - we plan to try firm tofu. You can add cooked rice or pasta too for a more substantial salad.

I will try your strawberry salad as local strawberries have just come into season here (West coast of Canada).

Fruit salads are nice too...have you tried a fruit mixture including fresh blueberries (key ingredient), plus slivered almonds and then ginger ale on top after dishing it out? Very refreshing.

Thanks!

Hi Joni!

Sounds like a wonderful salad! Try adding some dried fruit to it. Curri and dried fruit always works. How can anyone forget couscous? Its so simple to make no cooking.

Yes, those local strawberries are wonderful.

BTW- I'm here sweating it out in Victoria BC!

I like my salads and found the answers to your question too limiting.

Green Salads, Caesar Salads, Greek Salads, Potato Salads, Pasta Salads are all on the menu.

I only had the five choices. I had thought of putting down - Love all salads! - as the last answer but thought it would be better if I had an option for some other kind of salad. I also like to get talk about food in the discussions.
